Lift Work

A sound work which will be installed in the lift within the Community Arts Centre, this project aims to create an enjoyable, playful moment in the everyday motion of using a lift.

Created by sound artist Alex Bowen, working with Andrew Sabin, the work will play with the normal expectations and functions of a lift, by small modifications within current provision - i.e. control consoles and speakers.

The basic idea is to create a work which the user can choose to experience by pressing, say, an extra button on the console of the lift controls. Rather than piped muzak or a description of the facilities on the next floor, the lift traveller will experience a completely new type of sound.

The project will be designed working closely with the lift manufacturers, to ensure it does not confuse or interfere with any of the safe workings of the lift.
