Waste Works 3 (Community Building Waste Management)
Artist: Stefan Shankland with Andrew Sabin
Permanent Work
For this commission, the artists hope to work closely with the
new management of the Community Arts Centre, the core of the Horsebridge
Development. The aim is to continue with the themes of exposing
the movement and use of materials within a contemporary urban development,
showing the cultural significance of these materials and their sculptural
potential.
The project will create a variety of site-specific containers to
be placed around the building. These might be freestanding, integrated
into the building structure, part of the furniture, or completely
mobile. Most importantly, they will show their contents in some
way - through coloured or frosted translucent materials or otherwise.
The containers will each be a receptacle for selective recyclable
materials and will create an ongoing, dynamic picture of what the
Centre consumes and discards through its daily life. It is also
hoped that these visual representations of what is thrown away might
make users reconsider how much they consume.
To create these works, a short research period and audit will need
to be carried out with the management of the Arts Centre. This will
create a prediction of the likely size and nature of consumption
around the Centre. From this information, the artists will create
a system of visually engaging units which will become an integrated
artwork around the building. By working closely with the Council's
waste management personnel, the artists will ensure that the designs
fit with the normal waste collection procedures.
