Waste works 2 (Domestic spaces and roadside collections)
Artist: Stefan Shankland with Andrew Sabin
Permanent Work
This commission focuses on the movement of domestic waste material
from the house to the point of its collection on the street. The
work will highlight the movement of such waste materials, revealing
the link between an individual's consumption and the industrial
scale of municipal waste collection which is carried out every week.
The project will create specially designed pavement areas where
residents' waste will be placed each week, ready for collection
by the refuse contractor of the Council. These areas will be slightly
intriguing and different from the paving around them, but will not
create any hazard or access difficulties.
The project will also design the housing for domestic waste within
the garden and yard areas of the residential parts of the development.
This might include the use of light, colour or other materials,
making a usually mundane and hidden area into a place of interest.
