The Hoardings Project - Temporary Work

Artist: Stefan Shankland with Andrew Sabin
July 2002 - end of construction

Another temporary onsite project during the construction period, this intervention into the hoardings around the site aims to encourage interest in the building process by opening up a set of strategic views of the development site.

"RGB Screens" have been cut into the solid wooden hoardings around the site. These are coloured, hard-wearing perspex windows, protected by a steel mesh, which turn the day to day view of the site into a spectacle. The fascinating performance of machinery and workers on the site, as well as the changing forms of new buildings, are transformed into a series of monochrome ever changing images. The experience can be enjoyed by passers-by both on foot or in a car, as moving past at speed creates a multi-coloured film clip effect.

The windows have been lit from behind the hoardings, so that at night they are seen as coloured windows hanging in space through which the site can be viewed in red, green and blue.
